The ability to put matters sensibly into perspective
Growing up in a family of eight children taught me that balancing to maintain your equilibrium is something that might be of great significance in order to find your own living space and whenever necessary to defend same. Within a large family the social skills are natural elements which from a tender age gradually become ingrained as a trait of character.
To give and to take, but particularly the willingness to share, are some of the aspects that I got to appreciate later in life. In a further analysis I realized that these aspects originate from learning to cope with one another as partners of a large family. Afterwards they proved to be very useful traits for me. These are
also the traits that I try to provide my four children within their search for their own place in life. Guiding these four (little) persons, among whom a twin, on their path of life, forces me again to sometimes look at the more intricate matters through the practical eyes of a child. I call this “the ability to put matters sensibly into perspective”.
Also because he got to grow up in the Netherlands from a rather early age, a period of an ample 20 years, Gerrit learned to look at things in an impersonal and down-to-earth manner. His law studies he completed within four years at the University of Amsterdam. In the meantime he considered himself entitled to temporarily interrupt his studies to indulge himself in a worldwide tour of a year and thus gain a load of experience in various countries.
The lawyer in practice
The entrepreneurship and solution-oriented thinking are traits of character which now stand me in good stead while performing my professional duties. Since 1996 I have been practicing law as a litigator and in various lawsuits I was able to achieve the desired results. I am sufficiently experienced enough to dare state that in principle most big or smaller conflicts are suitable to be solved without litigation, such as family disputes, consumer matters and disputes with the government. No matter which parties are involved in such conflict, whether being private persons, small and large enterprises and organizations, government, or semi-government. The ability to put matters sensibly into perspective offers excellent chances to find a solution, if you prefer to reach the solution between parties, either because you want to retain the relationship with the other party or because you want to end it on good terms. But also when you want a custom-made solution, because the legal decision alone may not solve everything and/or if you are willing to consult with the other party and to negotiate in a businesslike manner. The experience of my practice furthermore taught me that with the ability to put matters sensibly into perspective it is quite possible to solve problems once and for all and in coherence whereby it might turn out to be more beneficial than a costly and especially long drawn-out legal procedure which ultimately is decided by someone else. The way through the Court often knows neither winners nor losers. The parties, in my opinion, stand more to gain by a purposeful way to deal, leading to a situation which both parties can live with than by settling the dispute through a procedure at the Court.
In the end the results achieved are what counts and not who is or should have been the winner.
Due to his different outlook on legal questions, Gerrit participated for the past years in the editorship of various magazines and he wrote primarily on the ethical aspects of the law. Apart from that he is also a member of a panel of experts which regularly forms part of educational programs via the radio. |
